Welcome to the Holiday Tablescape Tour of 2016. I’ve partnered with some of the most talented DIY bloggers for a jam packed tablescape tour. You won’t want to miss a stop because there’s lots of decorating inspiration for all.

I hope you enjoyed my holiday home tour last week. Today I’d love to invite you into our dining room. I didn’t spend a lot of money on this tablescape. In fact, most of the decorations were created with a copper plumbing pipe, truth!

This copper pipe centerpiece was made with—you guessed it—a copper pipe. You can learn how to make your own copper pipe centerpiece here.

It doubles as a beautiful floral centerpiece, too!

For the napkin rings, you can cut small pieces of 3/4″ pipe and roll the end of napkins into the pipes. I might buy a larger copper pipe in the future to make bigger napkin rings. Go ahead, make your own by following this video for cutting pipe by hand.

For a touch of natural beauty, I tucked a few blooming camellias from our yard into the rings.

I try not to buy greenery, but a few years ago I fell in love with seeded eucalyptus. Luckily my grocery store carries bunches to purchase.

I’m excited for Christmas morning. We usually have family over and have a big Christmas brunch with lots of pancakes. Yum!

Colorful Fall Tablescape Home Tour: Part 2

Welcome back. If you were here for the tour on Friday, I’m so happy to see you again. I have the table set and would love to have you join me for some good food and great conversation. Today we are going to be sharing part 2 of the Colorful Fall Tablescape Home Tour.

If you’re new around here, I built my own farmhouse table last year and love the rustic look and feel. I scoured Craig’s List until I found chairs that I love. The chairs came with a table that was painted white, but I quickly turned around and sold it on Craig’s List. I don’t have any interest in keeping chairs and tables as a set. (Throw rotten tomatoes at me, go ahead.) I tend to like the collected and eclectic look. Which explains the nailhead trim head chairs I purchased at World Market (see below for source links.)

The pedestal fruit bowl used to be dark walnut, but it had fallen out of favor in my decorating so I added two coats of chalk paint and distressed it. Now I love it again!

The place settings were left simple with a burlap ribbon around the plates and a mini pumpkin on top.

I used some alstroemeria flowers in little votive jars because I knew they last longer than other flowers. Unfortunately the peach colored flowers already dropped their pedals but the yellow ones are holding strong.

A few years ago I temporarily taped antique sheet music into the back of the buffet hutch. It’s funny how temporary sometimes becomes more permanent. I added the fake white gourd and pumpkin to the shelves. Don’t mind those two pinecones peeking out from the top shelf. I guess I couldn’t see them when I was decorating. Oops.

Holiday Home Tour – Dining Room

Holiday Woodland Tablescape 2015 | Pretty Handy Girl

Welcome back for another holiday room tour! Today I’d love to have you join us in the dining room. Can I tell you a secret? I don’t usually make a big Christmas meal. Instead, I like to make a huge batch of pancakes and bacon or sausage. I’m definitely a breakfast for lunch or dinner kind of gal. In fact, we sit down in the dining room and the whole family enjoys a big brunch on Christmas day. Maybe one year I’ll surprise the family with a ham. Or maybe not.

Apparently I’m old enough to witness a trend go out of style and come back again. I’m thrilled to be able to dust off my blue and white Spode plates and use them on my holiday tablescape this year. Do you have a collection of blue and white plates? Do you use them all the time, only for special occasions or never?

It was great to bring out the deer from last year’s tablescape. They really add the woodland feel to our table.

I purchased a mixed green garland from Kroger and pulled it apart to decorate the table and more! Gotta love getting fresh greens from the grocery store.

Fall Home Tour 2015

When I got back from my extended stay in Houston (after my sinus surgery), I was so anxious to decorate for fall. All those magazines I’d been perusing and all the beautiful Instagram photos had me craving some beautiful autumn decor. It took me a few days to get my energy back after I got home. In fact, I was still feeling a little worn out when I spotted this post on Facebook about a local multi-family yard sale that ran Monday – Saturday.

I thought it was a joke or a dream. But, something told me (more like fifty of my fans on Facebook) that I should get off the couch and high tail it to this sale. My sweet friend Candace from Rusted Roots Blog was easily persuaded to meet me there, so I wouldn’t be the only fool who fell for a yard sale mid-week.

We both filled our cars with some great finds! I got home and quickly put together a little pumpkin and rustic relics display by our side door.

Rustic Wood Farmhouse Table Top from Reclaimed Lumber

Reclaimed Lumber Farmhouse Table | Pretty Handy Girl

I’ve always wanted a rustic wood farmhouse table. I wanted a table that looked worn, well-loved and appeared to be over 100 years old. It’s very hard to achieve that look with new lumber. To get that rustic look, you either need old reclaimed lumber or the skills to stain and distress new wood. I chose the first option and bought reclaimed rafters from The ReUse Warehouse in Durham, NC.

They were very rustic to say the least. I was prepared to plane and glue them together myself, but I don’t own a planer (insert sad trombone sound.) Instead, I brought the rafters to Mark Kegler of Kegler’s Woodwerks. Mark has ALL the woodworking equipment and he convinced me to let him glue the tabletop together since I realized I also don’t have 5 bar clamps (Christmas wish list updated now.)

For fun I thought I’d show you the behind the scene pictures of the table top as it was being planed and ripped. That way you can view the process should you decide to piece together your own reclaimed lumber table top.

Behind the Scenes at the Shop:

First they ran a metal detector over the beams and then removed nails with an extractor.

Next, the rafters were fed through a planer to give them all a uniform thickness.

It was like Christmas morning watching the wood as it came out and I could see the of the beautiful grain revealed.

Mark and Randy used a straight line rip saw to cut the edges straight with the exception of two rafter edges that would be used for a live edge on the table. I was able to salvage the edges that they ripped off for later use.

The boards were glued with wood glue and clamped together. Then they were left to cure overnight. In the morning, the short ends of the table were cut square.

Back at home I built the table base (the apron and legs).

Finishing the Reclaimed Wood Table Top:

Remember the salvage I kept from Mark’s shop? I used it to cap the table as edge band to hide the end grain. Hold the edge band up against the end, mark and cut the excess off.
