How to Slipcover a Couch Beautifully
We definitely have paranormal activity in our home. Things move without explanation. Pillows that were strategically placed by me to look magazine pretty inevitably end up on the floor after I leave the room. Kid sized chairs levitate on their own and land on top of the couch.
And don’t even mention this pillow that has systematically lost all its buttons one-at-a-time!
When questioned, both boys emphatically shout “It wasn’t me!” Hmmph.
Well, if this continues I might have to call in an exorcist, because it is getting VERY annoying.
But, I know you don’t want to hear about my boring ghost stories. Instead I thought I’d share with you a great source for brand name (to remain un-named) slipcovers at a fraction of the cost! May I introduce to you UglySofa.com.
And let me tell you, the name is a misnomer, because this family-owned company is actually on a mission to give you a beautiful sofa! When UglySofa.com emailed me and said they wanted to send me a “brand name” slipcover to try out, I was skeptical. I mean – come on – how can you sell slipcovers from the famous PB&J (minus the J) at a fraction of the cost? I really doubted their authenticity. But, low and behold, a few days later my boxpleat slipcover arrived and when I opened it up, it truly was the brand they said it was and the quality was just as good as the slipcover I bought years ago from the store “that shall not be named.”
Slipcover a Couch Beautifully
I immediately ran over to pull back the worn red slipcover I’ve been using for as long as my oldest has been alive. WARNING: What you are about to see is a flashback to the 90’s. I admit, I did recover this sofa way back in my college years when hunter green was popular color. (I’m sad just wondering when blue-gray will be the “dated color”.) But, if you saw the granny fabric that lay beneath you’d be even more horrified.
Now don’t even ask me why we still have a sofa that is well over 20 years old. Someday we’ll get around to replacing it…until then I have my new slipcovered sofa! Isn’t she pretty?!
Have you ever purchased a slipcover because it looked beautiful in the catalog only to get it in the mail and you can’t for the life of you figure out how they got the slipcover to look so good?
That used to happen to me too, until I worked as a photo stylist for Plow & Hearth (one of my responsibilities as a graphic designer for their catalog). I learned how to install slipcovers so they look beautiful.
Here are a few easy tricks for installing a slipcover so it look less like a rumpled college frat house slipcover. Please excuse my “butt shots”. I’m still new to this little thing called vlogging!
Start out by getting the ginormous cover on.
Find the “Back” tag on your slipcover. (And don’t look at the famous PB & J (minus the J) tag. Ha, I made you look ;-).
Throw the “back” of the slipcover over the back of your sofa.
Locate the center of your slipcover and center it between the two arm rests.
Then line up the front skirt of your slipcover. I like to let the skirt puddle on the floor a little instead of kissing it.
Smooth out the fabric with your hands, and neatly tuck and fold under any excess fabric.
This is especially crucial on the arm rest, you want to disguise any excess fabric so the slipcover looks like it was custom made for your sofa.
Wrap the side panels around the side.
Locate the D- rings on the back of the slipcover.
Feed the straps from the side panels through the D-rings in the back of the slipcover, and loop back between the two rings.
Pull the straps until the slipcover is tight. Be sure to leave enough slack to be able to tighten the other side.
Tuck any excess fabric into the folds behind the side panels and the d-rings.
Once you have the slipcover positioned, folded and tucked the way you like, then insert several cardboard light-sabers shipping tubes into the crevices between your cushions.
These will secure and hold your slipcover in place.
And now, another little video on eliminating the wrinkles in your slipcover. I just used my hands and a squirt bottle filled with water. Be prepared as I almost cross the line. I admit it, sometimes I have the mind of a 7th grade boy.
I hope those videos were helpful for you! Do you like my new UglySofa.com slipcover?
The boxpleat slipcover has a nice relaxed weave, very similar to a grain cloth.
And the sides drape nicely over my sofa’s arm. The color I chose was ivory linen.

A great tutorial! I purchased a SF sofa cover for our sofa bed. The sofa bed is 73″ long and was advised to buy the sofa size versus the love seat size. Naturally, I bought the sofa cover on final clearance–no returns. TOO BIG!! But after reading your blog I think can make this cover work with some extra nips n tucks. Many thanks!! 😉
Love this used on my sofa give it a plus stays put when people sit on it must be material sofa made of goes with our decor perfectly thanks for awesome idea
I ve ordered several slipcovers…urs is the prettiest I ve ever seen…..the pleats really make it
Where did u get it? I returned all of the ones I ve ordered😢😢😢😢
Love the shipping tube idea – will have to try that! I’ve tried upholstery pins, which help…but the areas around the cushions still come loose. Thanks for the new idea!
Lauren, I hope you find it better than the pins you were using.
I also had a horrible experience with uglysofa. After waiting over three weeks for my order, it arrived damaged. I emailed their company three times and never got a response. I finally made contact through their Facebook page, but the told me that I knowingly ordered damaged product and were really rude. They’ve been ignoring my emails ever since. Horrible customer service! DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY!
I’m so sorry that happened to you Amy. I am not affiliated with them. They were responsive when I ordered my slipcover. But, that was a year or so ago. Sounds like things have changed.
I had a very disappointing experience with Ugly soffa and wouln’t recommended to anybody. I bought two slipcovers fom them and was really excited until I’ve got the packages and attemp to put them on my sofas. I bought a slipcovef for my small sofa and one for my large sofa with separate slipcovers for the sofas’ T cushions. The separate slipcover fo the cushions of my large sofa is the wrong size, it just don’t fit. I cmoarec it with the one I’ve got for my small sofa and thy are the same size so clearly I had the wrong size for my large sofa. I have contacted several times about it and they never responded. So be aware, if you ever have a problem with your order and you are passed the 2 days ( yes, you only have 2 days!!) for returning merchandise, they will just ignore you. Their customer service is the worst!! Never ever order from here.
Well, THAT was the bargain of the year! I can’t thank you enough: Bought the same slipcover, followed all your directions: it’s brilliant for $30!
Good to buy a few twist pins: my sofa has squarish thin arms instead of the round fat arms that the slipcover was designed for and this still worked out brilliantly. Just keep folding excess fabric under into sharp corners and secure with a twist pin (I only needed 4).
Thank you so much! Posted my experience on Patternreview.com
Jane in NYC
Uglysofa.com charged my credit card and never delivered the slipcover. Emailed the company twice for order updates and got zero response. They have no contact phone number. I have no choice but to believe they are scam artists.
Seattle Girl,
I heard back from my contact at UglySofa.com. Can you give me the name your order was placed under and a city and state so she can search her database?
I’m sure it was an oversight. I’ll keep in touch.
Brittany
Thanks Brittany, I appreciate you contacting uglysofa.com. Once you did they emailed me promptly to say the slip cover was on back order. I ordered it 8/27 and heard back 9/12. They gave me a refund. Many thanks for your efforts!
Hello Brittany,
This was an awesome post! I learned the hardway of how to put on a slipcover. My burgundy floral, 30 year old sofa, loveseat and chair at the cottage have cream dropcloth S.C. and it took me a few times to get them situated properly. I will get some “dur-durs” (round tubes!) to help finish the look.
I do enjoy your blog!
Kind regards, Laura
I would love to have the Loosefit Square Cushion Tailored Slipcover Large Sofa in Natural Twill.
Shoot! Looks Like I missed out on this great give away! But I am IN LOVE with the Ivory Linen Box Pleat and am wondering if it’s thick enough to cover a really “bold” {read: scary, loud French Country floral ;} pattern that I inherited from my sister! I have ordered SO many slip covers that are too darn thin & flimsy and see-through!
Thx!
m ^..^
Wow – I love this site – I’m hoping for the large sofa box-pleat style. Hope I’m not too late in entering. Thanks and I always enjoy your blog 🙂

We have a pair of ’70’s lime green velvet armchairs that are crying for slipcovers – really, I can hear them calling to me from the next room! 🙂 I was just on the uglysofa.com website looking for covers and was leaning toward the t-cushion separate seat natural twill covers.
Firstly, Your blog is wonderful and has given me a bunch of ideas. How did I come across you? I found a tutorial of yours for the chair makeover on Pinterest. YAY! I have since been following you on Google Connect.
This is a great giveaway. I would love to win the Loosefit T Cushion Boxpleat Slipcover Large Sofa in Ivory Linen. 🙂

Yep, my living room sports the plaid, you know, the cranberry, hunter green, navy blue and tan PLAID, with tears in the arm rests that I have sewn about 10 times. I have an UGLY couch. I would love to win the Separate Seat Square Cushion Slipcover Large Sofa in Walnut.
Thank you for the givewaway~ WOO HOO~
I’ve been following you for quite some time on google and facebook. Doubling my chances to win a slipcover. 🙂
I really need to win one of these slipcovers! Finally got my favorite old sofa from Greensboro to my son’s apartment in Chapel Hill but the upholstery isn’t “his style”. Early ’90s plaid not my style anymore either but the comfy-ness….oh my!! Think the style of your slipcover would be perfect, box pleats and neutral color. Getting a slipcover to him will be much easier too. The sofa stuck out of the back of my SUV, warning beep that the hatch was open for an hour and exhaust fumes did not make for a fun trip! It was comical though!! Keeping my fingers crossed.
I love the Separate seat T cushion slipcover. Probably in Parchment Twill.
I follow you on Pinterest! Can’t wait to check out some of your inspiration.

Just found you today (and began following you via Google Friend Connect). I have such an ugly couch in the front room of our house too; this blog was so informative and gave me hope to turn it into something nice. =p I am interested in the ‘Loosefit Square Cushion Boxpleat Slipcover Large Sofa’ in ivory linen. It’s very pretty!
I don’t hate my sofa yet but I really like the idea of protecting my sofa from all the doggie/kittie love it’s getting with a washable slipcover. Now if they just made one with a plastic lining underneath I’d be set!
love the slip covers. I follow you. Love the T Cushion boxpleat.
Love following you on Facebook and Pinterest (although I am still trying to get the hang of Pinterest). The slipcovers I currently have on my beat-up old sofas are WAY past their prime…I’d love to win the loosefit square cushion boxpleat slipcover in Cranberry Twill (large or small sofa–I’ll need both!)
Oh, I’d love to be able to slip-cover my ugly sofa. It’s one of those horrible things you have to live with when you don’t have a budget for a replacement. A new alip-cover would take away the horrid tapestry-like, green, monster that lurks in my living room and transform it and my mood immensely 🙂
Oops, I forgot to say that I’d appreciate he Separate Seat Square Cushion Slipcover Large Sofa in Cranberry.
I love the boxpleat slipcover!
I follow you on twitter and really appreciated the video on how to tangle with a slipcover. It was great!

Hello there. I have a sofa which I would like to slipcover too. I followed you on Pinterest. I love Pinterest. But anyway. I would love the Separate Seat Square Cushion Slipcover Large Sofa – Honey Twill. My sofa is a cayenne color right now and I think a neutral color just may work.
Thanks for the giveaway!
I like the square cushion boxpleat in the honey.

Loosefit Square Cushion Everyday Tie Slipcover Large Sofa
My loveseat is leather, from Jennifer couches. It doesn’t hold a slipcover, What should I do? My Dad just died and my Mom won’t replace it because of memories. Th loveseat is badly worn.
I thought the water spray idea was just as brilliant as all your other ideas; that’s why I’m a loyal follower via feedburner both at home and (shhh) at work (I walk on the wild side!).
Much love,
Judith Ann
Wow, what gorgeous slips and what a fabulous price. My leather couch gets very hot and sticky in summer, when I change my living room from an Italian country look to more of a Cape Cod decor with sea glass and white. I think I would choose either one of those nice twills or the blue ticking strip in the Loosefit Square Cushion Tailored Slipcover for large sofas. Thanks for the chance to win — good luck with Hurricane Irene, everyone!
And a big ole wave from Cape Cod,
Judith Ann

Man do I need one of these! My cat has ruined the upholstery on my couch and I have it covered with a mish mash of coverings. Thanks for bringing this company to our attention!
I have looked at these slip covers a thousand times. I just didnt think that I could make them look the same as they were in the picture, but your video and photos have changed my mind. I like the ivory linen in box pleats for a small sofa.

Thank you!

Loosefit T Cushion Boxpleat Slipcover Small Sofa would be an amazing upgrade for my husband’s “man cave” beater loveseat. Currently a jewel tone plaid, this would cover-up so much ugly in the room! I’m thinking of either the honey twill or sage twill. Either would be an improvement!
I’m folowing via Pinterest.
Just “liked” you on Facebook! Excited!! 🙂
Have been following your amazing blog for a while now!
Thanks for sharing uglysofa.com! I love the look of your slip cover but I would have to get the drop cloth since I have a sectional and it NEEDS a makeover, lol!!!
Totally following you on Pintrest!!
Where do you get those light sabers….errr…shipping tubes…????
xoxo laurie
Laurie, I think I bought them in a 3 pack at Office Depot or Office Max in the shipping supplies dept. Laura used cut PVC pipes for her sofa which would hold up to star wars battles better 😉
-Brittany
I’m your newest follower – and looking forward to more great tuts from you, girl! Oh, btw – I forgot to tell you which slip I’d want. I love the Ivory Linen! Yours is so beautiful! 🙂
xoxo laurie
Hi Brittany! GREAT tutorial! Thanks for the inside scoop on those tricky slipcovers! I’m head over heels in love with that linen slip! If I won, I’d get one for my poor chair in my bedroom that has seen better days. The kitties have taken their toll on it. lol! Thanks for this great giveaway!
xoxo laurie
I’m following you on Facebook!
I want…no I NEED that square cushined tailored slipcover in blue celestial stripe!
I own this slipcover, I paid the higher price :(, but don’t really regret it because it’s great. I’ve had it about a year, and have washed it once(after someone spilled a cup of coffee). I have a large front loader machine, so I washed it at home. Washed and dried really well.
I think my couch requires the separate seat square cushion slipcover because of the back cushions.
Following you on Google friends.
i am a google follower.
I would love a Loosefit T Cushion Boxpleat Slipcover in cream twill for a Large Sofa if I won.
Holy smokes! I’ve heard a lot about UglySofa.com lately but had no idea their prices were so reasonable! I love it! I really like the boxpleat style too, although I would probably go with the stone twill for fabric.
I am already a follower. And yes, if I spotted you at Home Depot I would probably follow you there too, just to see what great new task you were up to. 🙂
Already a follower on FB!
I would love to win the Boxpleat in Flax! If I don’t win I am heading over to buy a few!
I would like the separate seat cushion and box corner slip cover for a small couch.
I could really use the drop cloth style for my camelback couch. I have wanted to get a slipcover for a long time, (dark blue fabric + white kitty= mess) but my couch is a weird style and I never see any covers made for that style…but UglySofa.com mentioned that a drop cloth will work for the camelback! Yay!
I follow you on FB
I got the cast-off leather couches from my employer’s breakroom last year, but the cushions are terribly torn. I covered them in several yards of pleather but haven’t had the time or money to actually sew the cushion covers. If I win, I’d like the (http://www.uglysofa.com/products/Separate-Seat-Square-Cushion-Slipcover-Large-Sofa.html)in cranberry or honey. It’s a three-cushion couch, so if this isn’t big enough, then I could do this in the small size for the loveseat.
I made a BIG mistake when purchasing my sofa and uglysofa.com has the cure at a reasonable price -fantastic! I would love to have the Loosefit Square Cushion Boxpleat Slipcover, large, in Flax Linen. Thanks.
Great website!
I am partial to the Loosefit T Cushion Boxpleat Slipcover Large Sofa in Flax Linen.

The separate seat square cushion cover for a small sofa in the lovely Honey color is begging to come to my house. I do, however really like those pleats on the one in your post. I bought a set of furniture used that the rest of the family despises. Maybe they’ll forgive me if I use slipcovers;-}
I would choose the exact one you have! 🙂
I followed you on FB 🙂 Wow, those are great prices! I agree, I’d pick the Loosefit Square Cushion Boxpleat Slipcover for a Small Sofa.

Hey Brittany! Your blog is number 1 on my daily reading list and today’s post is such a blessing! I have a daily battle w/ the slip cover on my family room sofa “slipping” and your tutorial just gave me the win!! And to be in the running for a NEW slipcover – it’s going to be a great day!!
You seriously could not have posted this at a better time. I was one day away from heading to HD to buy a couple drop cloths to make a slip cover for my 1970’s teal, aqua, and grass green sofa. Don’t let the first colors fool you it is a sight for sure! Not to mention the ‘beautiful’ floral cushy arm chair my mother is giving me. I seriously squeeled when I saw the prices of these!
I love the Boxpleat one but will have to opt for the Separate Seat Square Cushion Slipcover Large Sofa but seriously cannot decide between _ Natural, Cream or white … (facebook, pinterest)
I like the boxpleat coach slipcover in Stone Twill. perfect for our living room!

I’d love to slipcover my old ugly sofa! Unfortunately it has arms that are as high as the back, so I’m not sure if the slipcovers would fit it. I sent an email through their Contact form so they can let me know.

Perfect to cover up that ugly camel-colored sofa and motivate my planned redecorating of my living room!
