- Scissors
- Needle
- Thread
- Lamp shade with a separate top ring
- Paper towel roll
- Mosaic glass tile sheets
Instructions:
Cut up the lamp shade to expose the top ring.
This is what you should be left with:
Lay out your mosaic tile sheets. Cut the mesh to the height you desire for your lamp shade. The lamp shade I created was small, therefore I only needed a 6 inch height to cover the lamp bulb.
Lay two sheets of the tiles side by side and stitch the two sheets together at the seam from the mesh side.
Wrap the tile sheet around the lamp shade top ring and trim the excess tiles off.
Stitch the open ends together. I found it easiest to slip a paper towel roll into the center to support all the tiles while stitching it.
Stitch the lamp shade ring to the top of the mosaic tile tube. Loop the thread through the tile mesh and the lamp shade ring around the entire circumference.
Your lamp shade should look something like this:
Attach your lamp shade to the lamp and admire!
Lights out…
…and lights on. I love the shadows cast by the tile lampshade.
Enjoy a unique and beautiful lamp shade in your home. The mosaic tile lamp shade adds a touch of class and bling to our mudroom.

I love this idea! It looks fantastic and very expensive. I’d love to use it on my lamps in my family room. The current shades definitely need replacing, but I haven’t seen any I really like.
My concern is that my lamps are large and I use 13W CFL (60 W equivalent) in them. The lampshade you show looks fairly small & you stated that you only use a 25W bulb in it. Have you tried this with larger shades and higher wattage bulbs at this point? Thanks!
Deb, I haven’t, but you would want the shade to be a little farther from the bulb. The lampshade may end up getting too heavy with a larger diameter shade as well.
Original lampshade looks like it has a larger diameter at the bottom but finished lampshade is all one diameter from top to bottom. How did you get it all the same diameter?
Never mind, I see that you didn’t use the entire lampshade only the upper ring.

Omg I love you! Lol I’ve been looking for the perfect mosaic lamp shade without much luck. Now I can make my own!
The mesh usually has adhesive on it, does the heat from the bulb warp the lamp shade?
It’s held up for two years and I leave this little lamp on all night. I use a 25 watt clear bulb, so it doesn’t get too hot.
I like it! I have leftovers from doing the backsplash. I’m thinking pendants over the sink!
What a great idea for the pendants to match the backsplash. This project just keeps getting more and more exciting.
Never thought to match a backsplash. Cool idea!
That’s so cool! What a clever idea!
Love this! I’m always thinking of things to use as lamp shade “materials.” This is a really great idea and it looks perfect. Imagine all the color possibilities you can create too.
This is a really creative idea. It’s such an eye-catcher. I think I would like to put something between the tiles to cover the mesh. Any ideas? Sewing the mesh to the shade frame is much more sturdy than glue. You’re so smart!
This is a fantastic idea! I never would’ve thought of using tile sheets for a lamp shade. It has just the right amount of bling. 🙂
I love this little gem you created! The bling of it all is so beautiful. I must keep this one in the back of my mind for a project sometime. Great post & thank you!
You did an amazing job on this!! I love it.
Gorgeous! You have definitely earned a new follower! I can’t wait to do this myself.
