How to Install a Birdhouse on a Post

Want to add some birdhouses to your property without attaching them to trees? Today I’m going to share a super simply DIY project that will make the birds happy and make you smile. Learn how to install a birdhouse on a post within an hour.
My sons and I love watching the birds come to our kitchen window feeder. We want to make our yard a welcome place for all birds. We wanted to add more birdhouses to the yard by adding a two-story birdhouse. We already have two birdhouses (one that is a little wacky and made with knives), but I’ve always admired the two story birdhouse condos that house eight nests. When I saw one at the Southern Ideal Home Show (with a discounted price tag) I snatched it up.
Install a Birdhouse on a Post Materials:

- Two Story Birdhouse
- 4×4 Post Anchor
- 4×4 Vinyl Post
- Level
- Combo Square
- Drill
- 1.5″ exterior screws
- Circular Saw (or handsaw)
- Pry bar
- Marker
- Hearing protection
- Safety glasses
- Women’s Duluth Work Gloves
How to Install a Birdhouse on a Post Instructions:
Select a location to install your birdhouse. Try to find a spot that will get a decent amount of shade during the day (to keep the birdies from getting too hot.)
Twist the post anchor into the ground. When it becomes difficult to turn, insert the pry bar for added leverage.
Set your 4×4 post into the anchor.
Mark the height you want your birdhouse to sit (if it’s too low squirrels and other critters can get to the house. If it’s too high you won’t be able to set the birdhouse on the pole.)
Remove the post and use the combo square to mark a square line around the whole post.
Use the circular saw to cut through one half of the post. Flip the post over and cut through the other half. If you don’t want to use a circular saw, a standard universal handsaw will cut the vinyl post.
Set the 4×4 post back into the post anchor. Drive one screw into the post.
Check that the post is plumb on two sides of the post. Then secure the post with screws going through the anchor.
Set the birdhouse on top of the post.
Drive the provided mounting screws through the birdhouse base and into the post.
Stand back and admire your new birdhouse on a post. Time to advertise those rooms for rent!

Hello. Great work. I cannot find the white post anchor you have anywhere. The amazon limk is a black different dimension type. Any help on where to locate? Also, is it sturdy or should a wood post be inserted inside the vinyl? Did the vinyl collapse in any when screwing in? thanx
Sorry, the only one I can find now is that black one. You could spray paint it white. Or use a different style anchor like this one: https://amzn.to/2plC4Kw But, it’s still not white. I didn’t insert a wood post and it is definitely sturdy. But, it only has to hold up the bird house, nothing that weighs a lot. (But, if the birds gain weight, I’ll keep an eye on the post. LOL.)
I agree when you said that picking a shady spot to install a birdhouse post will entice the birds to pay your birdhouse a visit and to stay for a while. I just love the feeling of seeing a flight of birds dropping by the exterior of my home to get some shade while searching for food to munch on. This gave me an idea to put up birdhouse posts in the garden for the birds’ convenience and safety. I’ve spotted a couple of areas where to put these posts on but first, I have to shop for decorative wooden birdhouses to put on.
I have a birdhouse that is 3 ft long and 10 in wide, that my aunt wants on a post(4×4). It’s a beautiful house that looks like a small Western town. I painted it.vplease help me mount this so it doesn’t fall off the post. Barbara F.
You probably need to secure a platform to the top of the post and screw the birdhouse to the platform. Sorry I can’t help you further. It’s hard to picture your birdhouse to offer more advice.
I like how you said that you like the two story standing birdhouses that house eight nests. We also really love to watch birds but have never had a nest that could be used for them to live in until a few days ago. We’re going to be renovating our patio and want to put up a birdhouse like this as well. I think it will really add to the look of our backyard as well as giving us the opportunity to look at some beautiful birds.
Where did you but the anchor and post?
I have always love bird houses and I am always looking for new things that I can do to the birdhouses to make them more unique and to make my house unique. I like how you decided to put your birdhouse on a large pose in your yard. That way the house would be close to the same height that a real birds nest would be in a tree. I think that it would be a fun way to add a unique look to your yard and a fun way to bird watch.
