Easy Sofa Makeover and Living Room Mini-Makeover
Have you ever been bored with the way a room looks? Â For me, it was my living room. It houses the same sofa… The same lamps… The same golden frames surrounding the same prints we loved so much 13 years ago! I have a quick tutorial for giving your room a mini-makeover for not a lot of cash. This Easy Sofa Makeover will help you out.
Two years ago we gave the room a mini-makeover by changing the color on the walls, the drapes, Â and the carpet. But, my dear husband didn’t want me changing the art or the sofa. He said, “we paid a good amount of money when we “invested” in these pieces… Good quality pieces that should stay in there forever!”
My style has changed and luckily it looks like my husband’s style also changed. He has finally agreed to let it go.
The sofa is the one that got me working immediately. Â Don’t get me wrong, I loved this sofa, I still like it, but after more than ten years looking at the same thing I was more than ready to give it a spruce up.
Total cost for this sofa makeover: $25, including the pillow cases.
Materials:
- Decorative Nailhead Trim in your color of choice
- Tape
- Tack puller
- Flat nose pliers
- Hammer
- Knee pad
Instructions:
First check if your sofa is a good candidate for this option. Is it nicely finished under that skirt? Â Are the legs something you would like to show off?
If your answer is yes to those questions, then it’s time to grab the tack puller and knee pad and begin loosing up all those staples.
Then, use the pliers pull them out.
Do yourself a favor and tape the sofa’s skirt up while you work at removing them.
You’re going to end up with a pile of staples and that long, long skirt. Â By the way I’m already thinking about what to do with it, any suggestions?
Just by removing the skirt you give your sofa a new look and your room feels more open.
Get rid of the staples holding the fabric to the legs and tuck in the fabric. Â You’ll want a straight line before going to the next step…
A small amount of bling. Â The nailhead trim looks like a long ribbon of nailheads.
You simply hammer a matching nail in every five nailheads.
Instead of continuing the line to the back of the sofa, go around the front of the arms for more impact.
Five dollar pillow covers give those old pillows new life!
A switcheroo of lamps, a couple of old windows and I can totally live with this “new” room for another ten years 🙂
Well, maybe five. 😉

I like the pastel colors and of course those hardwood flooring look awesome too. The white pillow w/ the blue stripes is cool.
Such an amazing transformation with a few simple changes Cristina! I love it! Such a fresh pretty look now:)
Excellent job Cristina!!
Very nice makeover. Looks like you re-mixed your rug as well. I really like it as stripes. Good job!

You are a genius! I am wishing my couches had skirts now, just so I could make such an impressive change….I love it!
I loooove the couch update! It looks so much more modern and clean without the skirt. It makes the room feel more open with just that one change. Genius!
While looking at your amazing and yet so simple transformation, my mind was working at the spead of a bullet! I’m thinking my ‘well invested’ living room couches can go through this new look! I added beautiful fringes about 8 years ago, so maybe now I can just remove the skirts and the frindges, both, lol! Thanks for the great idea my friend. I just transformed 2 cake plates and made them with pedestals, as cake sands too….it was such simple job and yet what a change! Big hugs,
FABBY
Thanks Fabby, the added fringe is a great idea to another simple makeover, just the same as the cake stands…you’re right, “a simple job and yet what a change!”
Awesome transformation girl! The decorative nail head is a perfect touch! you are a BRAVE brave woman!
🙂 Thanks Jacque!
Looks fantastic! What a great idea.
WOW! I can’t believe just removing the skirt made that big of a difference to the couch! It looks gorgeous!
Thanks Ashley!
Love this idea & makeover! Such a huge difference with out spending a ton of money. Thanks for sharing. xx Liz Marie
Nice change! The sofa is still in great shape for ten years old. The excess fabric? Dye it and make sofa and chair pillows. I love having a lumbar pillow or two thrown in the mix, and the leftover fabric look just about the right size for them.
Thanks Andrea, the lumbar pillow sounds like a great idea to me 😉
I love it! I’m impressed you have had a white sofa for 10 years! I think I’m harder on my sofas than my dogs.
The re-decoration thing is funny though, isn’t it? Generationally, we seem to update our spaces more. My grandparents had the same living room for 35 years. I don’t think it ever occurred to them to change it out but I love changing things up every few years or so.
Thanks Laurie! I think the sofa is still white because is in the living room, no t.v. in there, the one in the family room is another story 🙂
Wow – what a BIG deifference this made! Love the colors in your new living room!
Wow! I love projects that are simple yet impactful! This is very inspiring – pinning!
